NEW MILFORD – Alexis Monroy wasn’t fazed. If anything, this type of situation brings out her best.Seventh inning. Tying run on second base. No outs.
The New Milford pitcher never felt pressure.
“It just makes me want to throw better, and then I know if I throw a pitch and they hit it, someone’s going to back me up,” Monroy said.
With help from her fielders, Monroy worked her way out of the jam and sealed the Knights’ 2-0 victory over Ridgefield in Friday’s matchup of the top two NJIC Liberty teams.
Monroy, a senior, got a strikeout. The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice, with the Knights (6-1) getting the lead runner at home plate. Then Monroy induced a game-ending pop-up to first base.
“She’s stone cold out there sometimes,” New Milford coach Jennifer Gandolfo said. “That’s one of the things I love about her. She doesn’t let that get to her. I think that was key. If she did, this could be a very different ballgame right now.”
This was a big victory for the Knights against the defending North 2, Group 1 champions. They strung hits together at key times. They fielded well. And Monroy gave them seven strong innings, striking out four batters and walking two.
