Mary Lange has a pair of red pants that she wore when Glen Rock rallied for an overtime victory over Hawthorne in the North 1, Group 2 football semifinal last November.
Part fashion statement, part talisman, Lange still wears those pants to every Glen Rock baseball game, cheering on her son Matt, the Panthers’ star senior first baseman.
And why not? The Panthers, No. 15 in The Record Top 25, were 14-2 and riding a 10-game winning streak heading into Saturday night’s game against Ridgefield Park.
“If it works, it works,” Matt Lange said with a laugh.
“I know,” Mary Lange said. “I’m crazy.”
No, not crazy. Just a sports mom.
They’re part of the fabric of high school sports life in North Jersey. They do everything from selling programs and hot dogs and raffle tickets to driving players to games and practices.
But mostly, they are there. And that’s what makes their stories worth telling, especially on Mother’s Day.
