Waldwick’s Ashley Buschgans is 9-2 with a 1.65 ERA. She is batting .441 with six doubles, a triple, five homers and 32 RBI.
Mike Kilgallen predicted this. The Waldwick softball coach knew the freshman had abundant talent. She had a tireless work ethic. She had the attitude of a great player.
So before the season, Kilgallen told her this would happen.
“I said everybody will know the name, Ashley Buschgans, at some point this year,” Kilgallen said. “And she’s made that come true. She’s just a dynamite kid.”
Buschgans has played a significant role in Waldwick’s turnaround. She is 9-2 with a 1.65 ERA in the circle, striking out 34 batters in 63ª innings. She also is hitting .441 with six doubles, one triple, five home runs and 32 RBI for the Warriors, who are 15-3 after finishing 11-12 last season.
Buschgans is just one of a talented crop of freshmen across North Jersey who have burst onto the softball scene this season. These rookies quickly have made an impact, showcasing their skills on the varsity level. The learning curve for many of them seemingly has been nonexistent.
They all possess similar characteristics: They’re poised on the field. They’re respectful of their teammates. They’re driven to succeed.
