HAWTHORNE – Resiliency appears to be a strong suit for the Hawthorne softball team this season. It was on full display in the Bears’ important 8-2 victory over Lodi on Monday in an NJIC Colonial Division game.
Sparked by Nicole D’Ascoli at the plate and in the field and Cielle Tousignant in the circle, Hawthorne improved to 11-4 overall and stayed in the Colonial race by moving to 10-2, only two games behind first-place Rutherford (18-1, 12-0). The Bears were coming off what could have been a devastating 4-3 loss to Clifton in the Passaic County tournament quarterfinals Thursday when the Mustangs rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to come back from a 2-0 deficit.
D’Ascoli, a senior shortstop, went 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, three runs scored and an RBI. Tousignant, a senior right-hander, threw a complete game four-hitter, striking out four and walking one.
“We never got down on ourselves [after the Clifton loss], we bounced right back up and stayed positive and really came out strong as a complete team unit today,” said D’Ascoli. “We’re a pretty tight group and nothing really brings us down. We felt if we could charge out of the gates early everything would be fine.”
