At times, Shafic Itani has made Emerson track coach Mark Ledgerwood’s job a lot easier when Ledgerwood tries to figure out if the Cavos can contend in a meet such as this weekend’s Red Littler Bergen County Division Championships.
Just pick four events for the talented senior and wait for the high point totals that are sure to follow.
On the other hand, it’s made Ledgerwood’s job a little harder, too: Which four events does he pick?
This weekend, the choice is easy. With Emerson in a good position to capture its first Bergen County Division crown since the 1990 Group 1 title, Ledgerwood will enter Itani in Friday’s “D’’ Division 400 hurdles, 400 and long jump at Hasbrouck Heights, and in Saturday’s triple jump at NV/Old Tappan.
“When I starting coaching I was told that in track and field, individual achievement equals team success, and Shafic has been an instant success from the first time he stepped on the track as a freshman,” fourth-year coach Ledgerwood said.
“I work as hard as I can every day to get a personal best every meet in every event, and score as many points as I can,” said Itani, who calls soccer his first sport (he led Emerson in assists last fall). “When I was a freshman, Coach Ledgerwood told me I could be very good in track and he was right.”
