RUTHERFORD – It’s been the best start in five years for St. Mary baseball after it was 6-0 at the end of last week.

The Gaels will take on one of the best teams in the state in Gloucester Catholic on Saturday at Tamblyn Field in Rutherford.

“We are trying to keep the kids focused this week and not look ahead to Saturday,” said St. Mary head coach Dennis Hulse.” We know we will see their ace Saturday and probably the best pitcher in the state.”

The Gaels won all four of their games last week including a quality 11-10 win at Millburn in an independent contest on Saturday.

The Gaels came from behind in the sixth inning after being down 9-3 and put up a seven-run inning to grab a 10-9 lead before holding on in the seventh inning. Sophomore Anthony Guarino got the walk-off single for the St. Mary victory.

Julian Mumford was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI for St. Mary. In addition Naz McIlwain was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs against the Millers. Tommy Genuario picked up the victory in relief on the mound.

In a battle of South Bergenite squads, St. Mary continues to show that it means business this season after a 12-2 victory over North Arlington on April 6 at home in Rutherford.

The Gaels jumped out to an 11-0 after two innings and never looked back. Gregory Cuevas led St. Mary’s offense with a double and three RBIs. Genuario and Julian Mumford added a pair of RBIs for the Gaels. Danny Elliot had an RBI for the Vikings.

St. Mary pitcher Greg Dahl picked up the win in the NJIC Meadowlands Division tussle.
