Bogota coach Jay Mahoney earned his 599th career victory on Thursday night after senior Andrew Riad made a three-pointer at the buzzer for a 41-40 win over Hawthorne Christian in NJIC Patriot Division boys basketball. Mahoney, in his 37th season at Bogota, is bidding to become the third Bergen boys hoops coach to reach 600, joining current Bergenfield coach Marty Rivard (who is in the 760s) and the late Chris Donfield, who won 648 with Bergen Catholic. Mahoney can reach 600 when Bogota faces St. Mary on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the first round of the 60th Bergen Jamboree at Bergen Catholic. Also, first-place St. Mary likely eliminated third-place North Arlington from the race for the NJIC Meadowlands title by rallying down the stretch for a 39-34 victory.
