The St. Mary baseball team is all in this season in pursuit of a Non-Public B state title.

“We don’t care about the league,” coach Dennis Hulse said. “We always have a goal of making the [Bergen] County final four, but if we don’t, that’s OK.

“This year we made it simple for ourselves. Wins and losses don’t matter. We have one goal: Play for a state championship.”

That’s why Saturday’s 10-8 victory over St. Joseph, a Non-Public A powerhouse, was such a big deal for the Gaels. They beat a quality pitcher in Rutgers-bound senior Joe Neglia on the road in a place where they’ve never won before.

Talk about confidence-builders for a team that prides itself on playing a most grueling non-league schedule.

“Last year, I don’t think we won one these games against Non-Public A teams,” Hulse said. “I was getting some feedback from people, wondering why we schedule these games.

“They are only going to help us, at least try to help us, to win a state championship.”

Hulse said the Gaels, who have climbed to No. 3 in The Record baseball Top 25, were drained by that win against St. Joseph and lost the second game of their doubleheader to Bloomfield, 9-7. But even that loss couldn’t discourage the Gaels. “We’re happy where we’re at as a team,” Hulse said. “We just keep getting better.”
