LYNDHURST – Going 1-5 during a preseason trip to Port St. Lucie, Fla., was an enlightening experience for the Lyndhurst baseball team.

“I think it opened up our eyes,” said senior right fielder Matt DeMarco. “We thought we were one of the better teams around here. When we went down there and played better competition, it made us realize that we still had a long way to go.”

The Golden Bears have come a very long way since that mid-March excursion. They’re one win away from winning the Bergen County school’s third sectional title since 2008.

Eleventh-seeded Lyndhurst (19-11) will play at eighth-seeded Parsippany (15-10) today for the North 2, Group 2 state championship. Playing this huge game away from home isn’t the least bit intimidating for the Golden Bears, who are 12-5 on the road.
