RUTHERFORD — Freshman Eric Bittiger singled in the game’s only run in the bottom of the fourth inning Friday, and second-seeded St. Mary made that stand up for a 1-0 win over No. 3 Newark Academy in North Non-Public B semifinal action at Tamblyn Field.
Senior third baseman Gregory Cuevas opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a bunt by Julian Mumford to set the stage for Bittiger, who finished the game with two of the Gaels’ seven hits.
Junior right-hander Chris Quijano (8-2) threw five innings of three hit ball, striking out four and walking two. Cuevas pitched the final two inning, allowing no hits and one walk, to earn the save.
The Gaels (20-8) face top-seed Morristown-Beard in Tuesday sectional title game at William Paterson University in Wayne.
