TOMS RIVER — Frank Clark broke the bitter silence of the losing huddle.
“You are champions,” Clark said, proudly. “You are flat-out champions.”
Waldwick (25-6) came down to Toms River East High School vying for state championship glory, only to come up a few hits short. Pennsville capitalized on its few opportunities with aggressive play and defeated the Warriors, 3-2, on Saturday in the Group 1 final.But Clark said the loss doesn’t diminish a historic season for the Warriors. His team won a sectional title for the first time since 2011. His offense ranked among the best in North Jersey. And a core of his lineup is coming back.
“When we came on the bus [Saturday], there were 12 teams left in the state of New Jersey out of hundreds of high schools,” Clark said. “By the time of our first pitch, it was six teams left. They should be very proud of themselves.”
