Saddle Brook HS

Paige and Samantha Costanzo bring their volleyball team an element of spirit.

The senior twins are starting middle hitters for Saddle Brook (10-3), which began the season with nine straight wins and is tied for first place in the NJIC Meadowlands Division.

When their high school careers began, they spent autumns cheering for the Falcons’ football team.

They joined volleyball as sophomores and debuted on varsity last year, but they remain involved in cheerleading in the winter.

Not that the Costanzos ever really stop.

“When we pump each other up for games, we have a nice energy and a nice flow on the court,” Samantha said after Monday’s match against Garfield.

That attitude drives Saddle Brook, a team that doesn’t employ traditional power hitters, yet plays fundamentally sound. The Falcons sustained several long rallies with Garfield, including a minute-and-a-half volley in which they saved a ball that bounced off a ceiling light.

The sisters rank 1-2 on the team in kills and blocks.
