Senior co-captains Maxine Walsh and Briana Cahill propelled Leonia to a 25-21, 25-19 girls volleyball victory over rival Secaucus on Thursday at the Secaucus Rec Center.
That marked the 33rd straight win against divisional opponents for the Lions, dating back to 2015. They improved to 14-0 overall and 11-0 in the NJIC Liberty, tightening their grip on first place by completing a season sweep of the Patriots (8-7, 7-4).
Last fall, Leonia snapped Secaucus’ 54-match winning streak within the division en route to claiming the title. Along with it came a different perspective.
“At first we were intimidated [thinking about] defending what we have,” Walsh said, “especially with all these other teams trying to take what we’ve worked so hard for.
