BOGOTA — Jay Mahoney digs the sole of his sneaker into the name inscribed on the court at Bogota.
He then mutters to himself as if he’s cursing the man whose name is underfoot.
Mahoney is tickled Bogota purple that the court has been named in his honor, and the Bucs will celebrate their longtime boys basketball coach with a ceremony before Thursday’s 7 p.m. home game against Midland Park.
Mahoney, 62, is in his 38th season leading Bogota and is believed to be the first Bergen County high school boys basketball coach to have a court named in his honor while still active.
“When I realized what it was, I was embarrassed,” Mahoney said before Wednesday’s practice. “And then I was just totally overcome with emotion.”
Mahoney has been a bundle of emotion on the Bogota sideline since the 1970s. His 610 career victories make him the winningest active coach in Bergen and third all-time.
