Domenic Mignone races toward 1,000 points for his career at Rutherford, he has found himself reflecting on his basketball journey and all the people who were there along the way.

Although he cites coach Nick DeBari as a great influence, his brother, Robert, has been there since Day One. He’s been a cheerleader during the good times and a confidant during the inevitable bumps in the road.

“He’s been my role model,” said Mignone, The Record Male Athlete of the Week. “He’s been training me since I was young. We would always go to open gym together. We would go a half hour earlier, stay a half hour later and just work.”

All of Robert’s guidance has paid off. Mignone, who was about 100 points shy of 1,000 by week’s end, is coming off a big week.

The senior guard had 31 points in just 20 minutes in Rutherford’s 67-24 victory over Garfield on Dec. 20. He also added six rebounds and four assists and made four three-pointers. Two days later, he tied his career high with 37 points in a 60-46 victory over Glen Rock. He also had five rebounds and four assists, and nailed six three-pointers.
