MAHWAH — When Hasbrouck Heights last won a Bergen County boys cross-country group championship, Richard Nixon has just resigned as President, the hot technological item was the video game Pong and music sounded best on 8-track tapes.
But the Aviators’ championship drought can now be consigned to history along with that trio of ancient events after Hasbrouck Heights’ impressive 50-103 victory over Cresskill in the Boys Division D title at Darlington Park on Saturday.
“I knew we had a good team coming back and then when (sophomore) Nick Bua and (junior) Jeremy Bailey quit soccer and decided to run, it all came together,” said Heights coach Mike Ryan, who was all of six years old when the Aviators won their last crown.
Bua and Bailey finished as the Aviators’ second and third runners Saturday in seventh and 11th place, but it’s a reflection of how good Heights was that they would have won without them.
North Arlington last had a boys champ in 1977 but Sirish Modhagala ended that drought as well and broke 17 minutes for first time in winning the individual race by 100 meters.
“It’s crazy that it’s been so long since we had a winner,” said Modhagala, who thrust his arms in the air at the finish line. “I’m glad the took the opportunity to come back to North Arlington (after starting at Paramus Catholic) and so something good for my town and school.”

GIRLS RESULTS
Giana DiLascio, who missed last spring with a stress fracture, reapeated her 2016 Division D win with a personal best 20:26, beating a game but hobbled Veronica Dunphy of Cresskill by 250 meters and helping Hasbrouck Heights to an easy 37-62 win over Bogota.
