Keeping track
- The Metuchen Relays went to a two session format this year and Westwood and Waldwick enjoyed great success in the afternoon portion of the meet.
- In addition to Marcus Cheema’s outstanding double 800 performance, the Cardinals got wins from Kayla Jarski (girls 800), Alana Burke (100 hurdles) and Connor Munson (110 hurdles, in a personal best 16.01) on the track. Westwood’s girls also placed in the 4-x-100, 4-x-200, 4-x-400, 4-x-800 and 800 sprint medley.
- Justin Napier was third in the 200 in 23.25, while Westwood was 5th in the boys 4-x-400 relay in 3:30.66.
- State javelin favorite Alianna Eucker, in her first meet at Westwood and first since knee surgery in October, won the javelin easily with a toss of 126 feet. She was also second in the shot and fourth in the discus.
- Waldwick junior Kiley Mironenko shook off a no mark in the long jump to win the triple jump in a then personal best of 35-6 3/4. Teammate Rashawn Markman leaped 22-8 1/2 to easily win the long jump defeating some of the state’s top jumpers including 2020 indoor Meet of Champions titlist Floyd Whitaker of Highland Regional.
- Top boys performances from the Season Opener: 400 hurdles: Ryan McKenna, Ridgewood, 60.7; Shot put: Tami Kabiawi, Fair Lawn, 45-5; Discus: Gavin McGarrity, Wayne Valley, 157-4; Javelin: Alex Ust, Bergen Catholic, 152-4; Long jump: Sean Emanuel, Ridgewood, 21-0 1/2; Triple jump: Lou Fry, Paramus Catholic, 42-6.
- Top girls performances from the Season Opener: 400 hurdles: Amber Barrios, Hasbrouck Heights, 66.3; Shot put: Ciara Donegan, Holy Angels, 34-10 1/4; Discus: Josie Struble, Pequannock, 114-4; Javelin: Melissa Viellette, Fair Lawn, 110-1; Long jump: Madison Libby, IHA, 18-1 3/4; Triple jump: Mady McDermott, Wayne Valley, 32-2.
- Pompton Lakes senior Nathan Armstrong of Pompton Lakes ran a personal best 9:32.21 for 3,200 meters at the Cherokee Night of 3,200s last week to break the 49-yearold school record set by Steve Crymple in 1972. Crymple ran 9:36.8 for two miles to win the group 1 state sectional championship that year.
- New Milford’s Kaden Stevens leaped a North Jersey best 45-5 in the triple jump in the Knights’ 89-50 loss to Lyndhurst last week. It marked the return to head coaching of Lyndhurst’s Tom Shoebridge, who retired after the 2018 season. He returned in 2020 but the pandemic delayed his return to the track until Monday.
- J.C. Baratta of NV/Old Tappan tripled the 100,200 and 400 at the Golden Knights win over Pascack Valley.
- Jack Ussher of NV/Demarest cleared a season-leading 6-2 at the Norsemen win over Tenafly.
- Northern Highlands won the 4-x-400 relay to clinch its 74-66 win over Hackensack.
- Abby Dennis of NV/Old Tappan made an impressive debut in the Golden Knights girls win over Pascack Valley. The freshman went 12.5-25.8 to win the 100 and 200 and also won the high jump.
- Nikki Woods and Michelle Lee of NV/Demarest and Norina Khanzada of Tenafly all scored season leading performances in field events at the Tenafly-Demarest dual. Woods threw a state leading 143-7 in the javelin, Lee cleared 10-6 in the pole vault and Khanzada high jumped 5-3 1/4.
- Randi Conroy cleared 10-6 in the pole vault and Brynn Madonna tripled the throws in Northern Highlands’ wins over Indian Hills and Hackensack. Madonna threw 39-4 in the shot and 122 in the javelin.
- Sanai Bryant doubled the sprints for Dumont and the Huskies used the double twin quartet of Lindsey and Shannon Buchheister and Annalise and Briana Manderson to win the 4-x-400 relay and edge Cliffside Park, 68-67 despite a distance triple by the Red Raiders’ Kelsey Pereira.
- Hawthorne junior Briana Andreoli had a terrific quadruple win in a double dual with Pompton Lakes and Lodi. She won the 100 (12.5), 200 (26.0) and 400 (60.2) in personal best times and threw the javelin 103-1.
- VeRon Garrison of Dwight Morrow crushed his own school shot put record in his first competition in 14 months, throwing 56-6 in a tri-meet with Dumont and Cliffside Park.
- Alex Kislenko won four events for Fair Lawn against Wayne Valley, winning the 100, 200, long and triple jumps.
- Teaneck’s new head coaching pair of Brian Walker (boys) and Carlene Cummings (girls) earned coaching wins over Bergenfield, with Jaden Mensah of Teaneck winning the sprint double in the Highwaymen’s 78-58 win over the Bears.
