Scott Mahoney earned his 400th coaching victory when his Pompton Lakes team took a 45-36 win over New Milford last night in Pompton Lakes.
The milestone comes in Mahoney’s 26th year at the helm of the program. Along the way, Mahoney has led the Cardinals to numerous winning seasons and their first-ever NJSIAA sectional title, in 2015.
Mahoney is no stranger to milestones, as the multi-sport coach picked up his 100th football coaching win in 2019.
The Cardinals earned bonus points in all but one of their non-forfeit wins.
Brett Daddis gave the Cardinals (3-0) six points with a pin over Yandel Mateo at 138. Nicholas Laccitiello pinned New Milford’s Nicholas Montalto at 150. Richard Devries took a fall over Cole Totaro at 190 and 215-pounder Andy Sanchez took a quick pin over Christopher Batista. At 165, Bassel Elmorsy gave Pompton Lakes three points by edging out an 8-4 decision over Joseph Tennant. Joseph Afflitto (126), Miftar Istrefi (138), and Zachary Maksimiak (175) took forfeit wins.
Sanchez’s fall made gave Pompton Lakes a 45-12 lead, which mathematically secured the win even with New Milford winning all four of the remaining bouts via pin.
Sutter Totaro (144), Shane Mastropierro (157), Frank Brescia (215), Devin Ryan (106), Joseph Langschultz (113) and Jerzey Ryan (120) took wins for New Milford (0-3).
