- Two North Jersey boys basketball teams won state championships.
- Several small-school teams made a major impact this season.
North Jersey boys basketball teams made another stellar postseason showing, with Bergen Catholic and Ramsey bringing home state titles.
Bergen Catholic finished No. 1 in the final North Jersey Top 25 rankings after repeating as Non-Public A state champion. The Crusaders needed overtime to emerge with a 56-52 title win over St. Peter’s Prep on March 12 at Rutgers.
Ramsey captured its first state title since 1950 courtesy of a 68-57 victory over Rumson-Fair Haven in the Group 2 final on March 14 at Rutgers. The Rams catapulted 10 spots in the Top 25 to No. 10.
That marks the fourth time in five years that North Jersey − defined as Bergen and Passaic counties − claimed two NJSIAA championships.
During the last five years, North Jersey’s record in state finals is an eye-popping 9-2. This stretch of success could be even longer if COVID-19 hadn’t halted the state tournament in 2020 and prevented a state tournament in 2021.
Two other small schools joined Ramsey in winning a sectional titles. Lyndhurst won its first sectional title in 45 years, capturing North 2, Group 2, and finished ranked No. 13. Waldwick, unranked entering the state tournament, won the North 1, Group 1 crown for the first time in 13 years and finished at No. 20.
Small schools made a big impact this season. St. Mary reached the Bergen County Jamboree final for the first time in program history and finished ranked No. 2.
A pair of small-school players became 2,000-point career scorers. Waldwick senior Andrew Del Rey finished with 2,166 points during that run to the Group 1 semifinals, placing him 11th all-time in Bergen County and 13th in North Jersey. Midland Park senior JT Graham scored 2,044, 16th all-time in Bergen County and 18th in North Jersey.
