RUTHERFORD – St. Mary’s talent is obvious, but so, too, is its lack of a senior in the starting lineup.
The undefeated Gaels were stellar at times, erratic at others, during their 79-63 victory over rival and previously unbeaten Wood-Ridge on Tuesday night in NJIC Meadowlands Division boys basketball.
“This was probably our worst game of the year,” St. Mary coach Brian Gaccione said bluntly.
“We were ripe for the taking, so for us to get out of here with a win against a league rival that was undefeated and have a good fourth quarter …”
St. Mary (6-0, 3-0 Meadowlands) was at its best during a fourth quarter in which it switched to a smaller lineup, committed to playing more diligent defense, and scored 32 points to erase a 51-47 deficit. It was in stark contrast to a nine-point third quarter.
