Glen Rock coach Bonnie Zimmermann had heard about Alex Mircea’s prowess on the tennis court before the diminutive seventh-grader came to a boys practice and asked if she could hit.A bemused Zimmermann declined her request, saying, “Sorry … you’re not in high school and you’re not a boy,” before adding, “Don’t worry … your time will come.”
Mircea’s time came, all right.
The Glen Rock senior capped off a spectacular career by winning all 17 of her matches and capturing her second straight Bergen County tournament small-schools first-singles crown.
Mircea led the Panthers to their first state sectional championship since 2000, and the NJIC Colonial Division title. She is The Record 2014 Girls Tennis Player of the Year.
“To accomplish all this in my senior year … it was amazing,” Mircea said.
Mircea, 17, was more than amazing this fall, using her incredible power to bounce the competition. She dropped just one set and lost an average of just over two games to each of her rivals.
