“The defense played a big part in it, especially playing against such a talented team,” said da Silva. “I think it was one of the best games we had defensively this season and it was probably one of the best performances I had.”

What it means

Waldwick remains atop Group 1 soccer with its sixth sectional title since 2014 and the fourth for the Warriors in the last five seasons. This comes after a talented group graduated for Waldwick and many believed that the program would be down while rebuilding its talent.

“The doubters wrote us off,” said Noschese. “We lost eight starters from last year and they underestimated us for our size, but when crunch time came, our playmakers made plays and they made this happen today.”

Waldwick will face the winner of the North 2, Group 1 sectional final between Brearley and Glen Ridge. Waldwick and the Brearley/Glen Ridge winner will compete for a spot in next weekend’s Group 1 state final.

With the victory hours earlier by the Waldwick girls soccer team, it marks the first time since 1995 that both soccer teams in Waldwick have won state championships.

They said it

“When we found out we were going to play at home at Warrior Nation Stadium… teams need to be prepared coming down those steps because this is a special place for us to play. Warrior Nation came out for both games and it was a great crowd.” – Waldwick head coach Jonathan Noschese.
