Here are the Players of the Week from the NJIC based on games from Monday, Sept. 21 through Sunday, Sept. 27.
Musa Bah, Harrison, Jr.
Harrison continues to march and topped Garfield and Wallington by a combined score of 10-0 last week. Bah buried four of those goals himself and added two assists. He’s up to 10 goals this season.
David Canaveral, Saddle River Day, Fr.
Saddle River Day went 1-0-1 last week and Canaveral played a big role in the win. The freshman scored the first two goals of his career and added two assists in the 8-2 victory against Paterson Charter.
Brennan Cortez, Leonia, Sr.
Cortez had a hot hand for Leonia last week. He scored twice and added two assists in a 6-2 win over Wallington. He then notched a goal and an assist against Rutherford two days later.
Jefferson Guerra, Palisades Park, Sr.
Guerra was outstanding in goal and helped power Palisades Park to a pair of one-goal victories last week. He notched six saves against both Secaucus and Paterson Charter and allowed just one goal.
Jakob Gwisczc, North Arlington, Sr.
It was a busy three-game week for Gwisczc and North Arlington. He played in all three matchups and held Hasbrouck Heights, New Milford and Lyndhurst to just two total goals while recording 33 saves. That helped the senior eclipse 200 for his career.
Isai Pacheco, Wood-Ridge, Jr.
Wood-Ridge snapped its nine-game losing streak to start the season thanks to a 2-1 win over Cresskill. Pacheco was dialed in in goal and made seven saves in the win. He’s now five saves away from 100 in his career.
Xavier Rios, Manchester Regional, Sr.
Manchester Regional topped Hawthorne Christian and Lyndhurst last week to stretch its winning streak to three games. Rios’ work on the defensive side of the ball was a big reason the team held Hawthorne Christian off the board and Lyndhurst to just one goal.
Juan Jose Trujillo, Weehawken, Sr.
Weehawken picked up its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Hawthorne last week. Trujillo had a fantastic game and supplied both of his team’s goals. He’s up to four on the season, which is already a career high?
Carson Turner, Eastern Christian, So.
Eastern Christian entered last week with a 2-7 record. Turner helped the team go 2-0-1 in three games. He had two assists in a 3-2 win over Hawthorne before adding another assist to go with a goal in a 4-4 tie with Bogota. His week ended with five goals and an assist against College Achieve Paterson in the Passaic County Tournament.
Marcel Zyla, Pompton Lakes, Sr.
Pompton Lakes ended its five-game, season-opening losing streak with a pair of wins. Zyla scored twice against Dwight-Englewood and also had an assist. He had another two-goal game against Elmwood Park two days later.
