Around the pitch
►Garfield stayed on top of the NJIC Colonial by rallying to beat Lodi, 2-1, on Friday. Jonathan Gutierrez and Brenden Baeza both scored in the second half to lift the Boilermakers to their seventh straight win. The Boilermakers have won all three matches decided by a goal this season.
►Saddle Brook (5-1-3) is much more competitive this season and earned its first Bergen County Tournament berth in six years. Junior Nic Mallon leads the Falcons with 10 goals and classmate Michael Pappagallo has a stellar 0.67 goals against average. The Falcons went 7-9 last season after finishing with one win back in 2019.
Bergen Cup bracket
The Bergen Cup begins this week with 17 teams vying for the title. Ridgewood earned the top seed this year, followed by Rutherford, Glen Rock and Bergenfield.
Seeding is based on average power-points per game.
The first three rounds have play-by dates with the opening round by Sunday, the quarterfinals by Oct. 17 and the semifinals by Oct. 24. The final is scheduled for Oct. 30.
