Around the pitch

►Hawthorne (5-6) has completely turned its season around after going winless in the first five matches. Since then, Ryan McMann’s club has taken five of the last six games to earn a surprise trip to the Passaic County quarterfinals. Alexander Castillo extended their run with an overtime goal on Saturday as the 13th-seeded Bears upset fifth-seeded Pompton Lakes, 1-0, and avenged a loss from September. On Monday, the Bears defeated their NJIC Colonial rival by the same score with Castillo burying a regulation goal. In another twist of fate, Hawthorne goalie Benett Megnin had the key assist in both games.
