The 2025 boys volleyball season is officially in the books.

 

Harrison HS

#10 final New Jersey State ranking and a 28-3 W/L record

The Blue Tide thrived in the first year under new head coach Anthony Sabia. Harrison began the season with 18 consecutive victories and made a run to a third straight Hudson County title. It fell in the sectional final to West Caldwell Tech to end what was an incredible season at 28-3.

Ranked #19 in the State was Garfield HS (21-10)

Garfield lost to Randolph in the final round of the North Jersey, Group 2 playoffs, but took down Science Park, West Essex, and Ramapo during its tournament run. Garfield finished 10-0 in the NJIC-American division and was led by senior Ylan Tapper who finished the season with 436 kills.

 

FIRST TEAM ALL-STATE

Ylan Tapper, Garfield, Sr.

Stats: 436 kills, 194 digs, 163 service points, 60 aces

After an impressive junior season that landed Tapper as a second team all-state selection last season, he broke out during his senior year with 70 more kills, totaling 436 for the year, and 958 for his career. Tapper led Garfield to a 21-10 record, ultimately losing to Randolph in the North Jersey, Group 2 sectional final and is committed to continue his volleyball career at St. Thomas Aquinas College.

THIRD TEAM ALL-STATE

Roger Chavez, Garfield, Sr.

Stats: 666 assists, 111 digs, 147 service points

Chavez totaled over 1,300 assists for his career at Garfield, and after a 2024 campaign where the standout setter had 633 assists, he outplayed his career season a year ago with 666 in 2025. Chavez exploded for 41 assists in the North Jersey, Group 2 final against Randolph, and helped lead Garfield to a 21-10 record while going 10-0 in the NJIC-American division.

Jeremy Rivera, Harrison, Sr.

Stats: 695 assists, 140 digs, 181 service points, 41 aces

Rivera flashed many different facets of his game this season, but one thing was evident – there is nobody that is going to outwork him. Whether it’s diving on the floor for a ball, or working the offense from the setter position, Rivera was counted on a ton this year, and succeeded. The senior helped lead Harrison to a 28-3 record and went on a nine game winning streak before losing to West Caldwell Tech in the North Jersey, Group 1 final.

Adam Uryniuk, Weehawken, Sr.

Stats: 347 kills, 20 blocks, 153 digs, 71 aces

Uryniuk burst onto the scene this year and had eight games with 20+ kills, averaging a little more than 18 per contest. Uryniuk also had 71 aces this year which was second in the state. Weehawken went 14-9 this season and lost in the semifinal round of the North Jersey Group 1 playoffs to Harrison.

NJIC Boys Volleyball Player of the Year and Postseason Honors, 2025

Player of the Year:

Ylan Tapper, Garfield

Ylan Tapper showed his elite athleticism all season long, and it translated to the court, as the high-flying outside hitter tallied a conference leading 436 kills, and finished second in aces with 60. Tapper, a volleyball commit to St. Thomas Aquinas College, led Garfield to a record of 21-10 and won the conference title.

Coach of the Year:

Anthony Sabia, Harrison

In his first year as the head coach of Harrison, Sabia led the team to a 28-3 record, good enough to win the NJIC-National title, as well as Hudson County Tournament title.
