BERGEN WILD CARDS: Garfield is the only team in North Jersey playing an independent schedule, which has pluses and minuses. Only three of the Boilermakers’ first 10 matches prior to Wednesday’s Bergen County tournament seeding meeting were against in-county foes. “We can schedule whoever we want, but sometimes, I feel a little in the dark when it comes to playing teams in [the county tournament],” Garfield coach Corinne O’Toole said Tuesday. “We don’t necessarily get to see them during the [regular] season.” The 5-5 Boilermakers have beaten strong teams from other counties, including 2013 Hudson champ Bayonne, 2-0. Their marathon 2-1 win over Passaic Valley on Tuesday featured stellar all-around play from setter Kamil Weglinski, who had 36 assists, nine digs, six kills and two aces.
IN THE WIN COLUMN: Lyndhurst earned its inaugural win April 17, 2-1, over Pope John in Sparta. The Golden Bears wasted no time in adding their first home victory versus Newark’s North Star Academy, 2-0, one day later. Senior Devin O’Donovan had 14 kills in the Pope John win, and sophomore Gio Arcentales set 35 assists in the two matches combined.
