Brandon Gomez, a graduate from Elmwood Park High School Class of 2015, had decided on playing football at Kean University during his senior year and that is what triggered where Santos was going to put on a football helmet. And there was no doubt that Santos wanted to follow in Gomez’s footsteps and work alongside him on the defense at linebacker.
“That was my first option and my only option,” said Santos about becoming a Cougar at the school less than an hour from Elmwood Park in Union Township. “My coach said to look at other options, but it was close to home and my friend (Gomez) was going there.”
Santos ran the ball as a running back for the Elmwood Park High School Crusaders, but it was his dominating play at linebacker that got him noticed. As a senior he was named to the All Bergen County third team as a linebacker with 151 tackles for the season, 12 for a loss and nine sacks.
While defense will be his forte at Kean, there is no doubt he will miss running the ball on offense.
