ELMWOOD PARK — George Johnston, the new Elmwood Park High School head girls basketball coach is trying to bring the program into the 21st Century where wins have been a rare breed for Lady Crusaders hoops.
The Elmwood Park School District has put the high school girls varsity program in the hands of Johnston, who recently was an assistant coach and freshman coach for the Westwood High School boys basketball program. His freshman team at Westwood was 24-1.
Daniel Basile, Elmwood Park High School’s athletic director, said that Johnston was a “perfect choice” to move the Lady Crusaders in the right direction.
“He is a teacher of the game, he instills discipline and expects every girl on the team to work to their fullest potential no matter their skill level,” said Basile.
Despite getting the job late, Johnston was able to get some practices in with some of the players. It was an abbreviated offseason workout, but it was more than had been done in recent history.
