NJIC football playoffs 2017: Who’s in and what are the cross-over games?

Hasbrouck Heights won the inaugural North Jersey Interscholastic Conference championship last season, and the Bergen County school is back in the final four to try to repeat.
The schedule for the in-season playoff and divisional cross-over games was announced by NJIC executive director Stan Frycynski on Saturday night as teams finished off their six-week schedule.
Here’s what you need to know about the next two weeks in the NJIC.
WHAT IS THE CONCEPT?
The NJIC’s in-season playoff was announced in August of 2016 as a way to bring competitive balance and help keep participation numbers up for small-school teams. The NJIC is a 24-team conference featuring Group 1 and 2 teams from Bergen, Hudson and Passaic Counties.
WHO ARE THE FOUR PLAYOFF TEAMS?
• The four teams vying for the conference championship are Hasbrouck Heights, New Milford, Rutherford and Wallington. All four teams went 6-0 to win their respective division.

Hasbrouck Heights at Wallington, 7

WHEN’S THE CHAMPIONSHIP?
• The winners of Friday’s games will play for the conference championship the weekend of Nov. 3. The time, date and location are still to be determined.
CROSS-OVER GAMES
• The conference’s 22 other teams will play cross-over games based on their performances through the first six weeks of the season.
What does that mean? The team that finished second in the Colonial Division will play the second place team from the Liberty Division. The same goes for Meadowlands and Patriot Divisions. It continues all the way down the line.
