NJIC Football

RUTHERFORD — “Josh the Frosh” was an unknown quantity for all of one game in his varsity football career.

Opponents are likely to take notice of Hasbrouck Heights’ No. 8 from now on.

Freshman receiver Josh Rodriguez debuted with a pair of touchdown receptions, including the go-ahead score, in the Aviators’ 24-18 NJIC win over Rutherford Thursday at Tryon Field.

“That team was good,” Rodriguez said. “So, I guess they weren’t really expecting me to do that much.”

Both teams are contenders to reach the NJIC tournament, so it is possible there could be another meeting between these two North Jersey Public Top 20 squads. No. 10 Rutherford (0-1) begins its Liberty Division schedule next week at Glen Rock.

No. 11 Hasbrouck Heights (1-0), meanwhile, has a bye week before facing NJIC Meadowlands rival Cresskill. That means the Cougars have an extra week to study Rodriguez and Co. on film.
