The Panthers’ senior catcher thought losing back-to-back NJIC Colonial Division games to Garfield and Rutherford would set a terrible tone as Glen Rock headed toward difficult division games against Hawthorne and Pompton Lakes on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
Scandale responded by hitting a two-run single to right-center that tied the game in the top of the seventh and afforded the Panthers an opportunity to come back and win, 12-5, in 11 innings. Glen Rock struck for seven runs in the top of the 11th, five on RBI singles, to pull off an improbable road victory.
“It showed what this team’s about,” Scandale said. “We’ve got guys that step up. That’s Glen Rock baseball. We rise to the occasion.”
Senior first baseman Matt Lange led off the 11th with a walk, scored on a throwing error and knocked in a run with a bloop single for Glen Rock, which sent 11 batters to the plate in that breakout inning. Senior designated hitter Matt Gresham, senior third baseman Mike O’Hagan, senior second baseman Mike Szawaluk and senior center fielder Max Felsenstein also hit RBI singles in the 11th for Glen Rock (5-2).
