MAHWAH – Michael Ragone started the season as a reserve outfielder. He worked, improved, and eventually earned himself a spot in the Royals’ starting lineup in May.

“This kid just shut up, did his work; he grinded it,” Ridgefield coach Joe Gambardella said. “We made a lineup change and he took fire ever since.”

On Wednesday, Ragone booked a trip to Toms River.

Ridgefield’s designated hitter came through with a walk-off, RBI single to send the Royals to a 6-5 win over Dayton in the Group 1 baseball semifinals. Ridgefield battled back from a four-run deficit, supported by three strong innings of relief from Chris Martucci. The Royals will face Shore – which beat Pennsville, 5-0, in its semifinal game – on Saturday.
