RIDGEFIELD — Good luck on trying to put a label on Eamon Catherina’s role with Group 1 baseball power Ridgefield. Odds are it will change every time you see him play.

That’s part of what makes the multi-talented senior one of the more fascinating players on one of North Jersey’s most interesting teams as tournament season quickly approaches.

“It all comes down to buying into the program,” said Catherina, whose Royals (10-3) are ranked No. 4 in The Record baseball Top 25. “On this team, you grind every single day. We all know that nothing is going to be handed to us, so we fight for what we do and play and prepare with a chip on our shoulder.”

In five games, he’s 3-1 with a 3.60 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings, and is three wins shy of becoming only the third pitcher in program history to win 20 career games.

But, in truth, Catherina shares that distinction on the Royals with left-hander Chris Martucci (3-2, 2.90 ERA, 40 strikeouts in 29 innings). Coach Joe Gambardella refers to them as “1 and 1-A,” with the top billing constantly flip-flopping between whoever happens to be on the mound that day.
