NORTH HALEDON — Rutherford didn’t play its best baseball Monday, but the Bulldogs’ 5-4, eight-inning victory at Eastern Christian exemplified how a team that replaced eight starters has exceeded expectations early this season.
Rutherford, ranked No. 25 in The Record Top 25, overcame four errors and a strong performance from Eastern Christian junior right-hander Matt Sorrentino to win its sixth straight game and improve to 8-1. The Bulldogs scored two runs on an Eastern Christian fielding error in the top of the eighth and junior lefty Max Maarleveld pitched out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth to earn his fourth win of the season.
