TOMS RIVER – Dennis Hulse came to Toms River in search of a state title in 1998 as a player for St. Mary. He came to Toms River South for the first time as a coach Saturday, trying to guide the Gaels to their first state championship since that day 18 years ago.
Hulse and his team couldn’t win it this time, falling to Holy Cross, 2-0, in the Non-Public B final at Ken Frank Baseball Stadium.“I told them to take it all in,” said Hulse, who spoke to his team about the experience of a state final. “It’s going to go by quick.”
It wasn’t happening quickly at the start for junior starting pitcher Chris Quijano. Despite striking out three in the first inning, Quijano gave up a one-out double off the center-field wall and a two-out walk. Quijano escaped with no damage done, but threw 27 pitches to get out of danger.
“I couldn’t find my fastball early, but I stayed strong throughout,” Quijano said. He said he didn’t experience fatigue despite throwing more than 50 pitches in the first two innings on short rest. Quijano threw 85 pitches Tuesday in the sectional final against Morristown-Beard.
