EAST ORANGE – One more second and Cresskill would have scored an incredible comeback win and trip to the state finals.

The Cougars lost to University of Newark, 56-55, in Thursday night’s State Group 1 boys basketball semifinal after a tipped shot in the lane with less than a second left, off an inbounds lob pass, was short.

Cresskill needed just one more second to complete its comeback from a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit at East Orange Campus, because senior forward Sean Kelly’s put-back came a split-second after the buzzer.

“We never backed down to anybody,” said Cresskill’s All-Bergen senior guard, Matt Flood, “and tonight was a testament to that.”

Cresskill (27-4) had University on its heels in the final minutes after trailing 43-31 earlier in the quarter and was one shot from earning its first trip to the finals since 2003.
