Steve Herget, a former player and assistant coach at Elmwood Park, will lead his first team as boys basketball coach at Leonia.

Herget was a multisport standout in high school who earned The Record Athlete of the Week for basketball as a senior in 2006, and spent the past four seasons as a Crusaders hoops assistant.

“Just coming from that experience, and with everything I’ve learned over the years, I’m ready to implement it and start my own program,” Herget said Monday.

“When we went through the interview process, he definitely stuck out,” Leonia athletic director Steve Perrotta said. “He’s somebody who not only comes with the experience, but he definitely came across as somebody who is motivated.”

Herget, 28, is a Montclair State graduate who teaches special education at the Elmwood Park middle and high schools. He was approved by the Leonia district’s board of education last month and replaces Vincent Johnson, who was 4-19 in his one season.

“I’ve been told we have multiple returning starters from last year. They work very hard and the commitment is always there,” Herget said. “And maybe a new voice will lend a helping hand to have this rebuild process take place. Everything I’ve heard from the kids has all been encouraging.”
