NORTH ARLINGTON — Senior Matt Karras was in an Advanced Placement class filling out a test form when he heard it over the intercom.

Senior Kenny Kuzmuk was down the hall in English when the voice began to deliver Tuesday’s morning announcement at North Arlington.

And junior Darian Nogueras actually shushed classmates in U.S. History 2, and “Everybody looked at me and said, ‘What is this kid doing?’ ”

The trio expected to hear about North Arlington’s latest golf triumph, but were shocked to learn they had “clinched a spot in the state tournament” — the first in program history.

“It’s great that we’ve come so far,” Nogueras said Wednesday afternoon.

“All the work we’ve put in is paying off,” Karras said.

After 10 consecutive years without a bid, North Arlington (12-5) clinched a trip to the North Group 1 sectional May 12 thanks to Monday’s tri-match sweep over Emerson/Park Ridge and Palisades Park. Teams need to win 60 percent of their matches by Friday to qualify.
