Pompton Lakes

Last year’s record: 15-3-4

Final ranking: 25

Marquee game: vs. Glen Rock, Sept. 5

Best assets: The Cardinals will have ample experience, as they have 13 players returning. Pompton Lakes was a stellar defensive team last year, allowing only 13 goals. For some members of the team, this will be their third — or even fourth — varsity season. “Coaching a Group 1 school, you’re constantly rebuilding every year,” coach Rob Edgar said. “It’s important to bring kids along as sophomores and sometimes freshmen as well.” Second-team All-Passaic County member Adair DeDios is back, and so is Roberto Perez, who will be a junior. Chase Goodwin and Miguel Almazon are also returning.

Biggest concern: Edgar said his team will spend time in preseason looking for ways to generate offense and be more aggressive on the attack. “We were almost too unselfish at times,” Edgar said, “and didn’t have that mentality to force somebody to defend you and be unpredictable on the attack.” Pompton Lakes also must replace Shawn Jennings, who scored 12 goals as a senior last season.
