Julie Wright will be the first to tell you that her son Dan has “turned to the dark side.’’

No, he hasn’t become a serve-and-volley player.

Dan Wright, a native of England who came to the U.S. with his family when his father got a new job six years ago, has taken to life in this country.

“Daniel wanted to play tennis in college here,” said his mother, who admitted her son is abandoning his European roots. “He didn’t want to give up that opportunity.”

A four-year starter at Saddle River Day, Wright capped a program-changing career for the Rebels by winning the Bergen County Group 1-2 first-singles championship and advancing to the state semifinals before falling to eventual state champion Michael Chen of Holmdel in three sets.

“I definitely accomplished what I wanted to,” said Wright, who went 25-1 this season and is The Record Boys Tennis Player of the Year.
