WOODLAND PARK — Experience trumped everything at Monday’s NJIC cross-country championships at Garret Mountain. Four of the six individual races were won by seniors, several in upsets over favored underclassmen, and the two juniors who won — Roshni Patel of Secaucus in the girls Meadowlands Division race and Sean Sullivan of Rutherford in the boys Colonial Division race — were the only repeat winners. Sullivan won in the day’s best time of 16:49, while Patel clocked 21:07.

Team championships were won easily by Lyndhurst, Bogota and Dwight-Englewood boys, and Secaucus, Cresskill and Glen Rock girls.

Not all of the individual races were as easy. Dwight-Englewood’s Ryan Semsel had to use all of his sub-two-minute, 800-meter speed to hold off a gallant effort by first-year junior Youssef Abubaker of Hasbrouck Heights in the boys Meadowlands race, the closest finish of the day.
