It seemed as if everyone in Wood-Ridge knew precisely how close Alisa Giordano was to reaching 1,000 points in her career. Everyone, that is, except Giordano.

Her coach, parents, teammates and friends conspired to keep her in the dark as she neared the milestone.

In fact, it was only minutes before Tuesday’s game against Paterson Charter that The Record Female Athlete of the Week found out the truth.

“On Monday I asked, and they said I was 46 points away,” the senior guard said.

“So on Tuesday, I’m thinking, ‘I’m 46 away. Why are there so many people at this game?’ I started to get suspicious.”

“Before the game, we huddled up as a team and [coach Jesse Romano] said, ‘You’re getting your 1,000th point tonight.’ I said, ‘No way.’ Instead of 46, I was only 12 away.”

So when Giordano converted a layup for her 1,000th point, the game was stopped and she was congratulated by her teammates.

Her parents, Wayne and Gina, her younger brother, Vincent, and her older sister, Danielle, gave her hugs.
