LODI — Garfield may not have been at its absolute best. But the Boilermakers were still able to cash in on enough opportunities to show that it should be a genuine contender in its league and for a playoff berth in North 1, Group 3.
Taking advantage of three recovered fumbles by Jeffrey Sanabria, Jonathan Portorreal and Kevin Castillo, Garfield, No. 17 in The Record Public Top 20 rankings, scored 14 second-quarter points on the way to a 14-6 victory over Lodi on Saturday in an NJIC Colonial Division game.
“We knew Lodi would be dangerous and pose a real threat and we weren’t disappointed, they are a very well-coached and hard-hitting team,” said Garfield coach Jeff DeVito. “But we were equal to the challenge and we were able to come out of here with the ‘W’.”
Garfield (2-0) was seeing its first 2015 regular-season action after being awarded a forfeit victory over Ridgefield last week. The Boilermakers came out sharp after Aveon Irving returned the game’s opening kickoff 50 yards to the Lodi 36-yard line. After driving to the Rams 5, Garfield fumbled the ball out of the end zone for a touchback.
