NEW MILFORD — Stella Mayer had the ball in her hands when the game was in the balance. And that’s just the way Dwight-Englewood likes it.Mayer scored eight of her game-high 17 points in the final five minutes to rally the Lady Bulldogs past New Milford, 35-25, Tuesday in an NJIC Liberty Division game.
“I just want to contribute any way I can. My team gave a great defensive effort for all 32 minutes and that’s what turned everything around,” said Mayer, a 5-foot-7 senior guard from Alpine. “The first half their 3-2 zone was giving us a lot of problems. Offensively and defensively we were struggling a little, giving up a number of second, third and fourth-shot opportunities for them off the offensive glass. But we settled down and played much better in the second half and especially in the final quarter.”
