ELMWOOD PARK – Elmwood Park needed time to gain its composure under the bright lights of a renovated gym and the pressure of the state girls volleyball tournament.

Senior hitter Vicki Stec and the Crusaders recovered from early jitters and played dramatically better in the second set of Wednesday’s 25-17, 25-14 victory over Wallington in their Group 1 opener.

Stec, who has amassed more than 1,000 career kills, had 12 of her 15 kills in the second set to lift 10th-seeded Elmwood Park (19-8). In that second set, the Crusaders did not have a service error and generated 18 points via kills, blocks and aces.
