She felt jittery before games. She became nervous when she went up to bat. She was “deathly afraid” of her own coach.
Saddle Brook’s senior lefty took to the circle Tuesday in one of the most important games of her career. Either she would lead her team to the Group 1 sectional title game or her high school career would be over.
This time, the pressure wouldn’t get to her. The Cedar Grove lineup couldn’t, either.
DiGiacomo tossed a complete-game shutout and struck out 10 as top-seeded Saddle Brook (26-4) earned a 3-0 victory over No. 4 Cedar Grove in the North 1, Group 1 semifinals.
“I felt great,” DiGiacomo said. “My adrenaline was out of control. I wasn’t nervous at all. I wasn’t tired.”
DiGiacomo has elevated her game during the state tournament for the Falcons, who will face No. 2 Butler in the sectional final. She still hasn’t allowed a run through three tournament games and didn’t give defending sectional champion Cedar Grove many chances to break that streak.
