H.S. softball: Sam Beazley carries on Pompton Lakes tradition GARFIELD – Sam Beazley just wants to be herself. And that has proven plenty good enough on the diamond this season for the Pompton Lakes softball team.

A three-year starting catcher, Beazley went 3-for-5 with two runs to help spark a 17-hit attack Wednesday as the Cardinals downed Garfield, 9-3, in an NJIC Colonial Division game at the Spring Street field.

This season, the senior is hitting .450 with three doubles, a triple, a home run and nine RBI. Last year, she was a second-team All-Passaic choice and first-team, all-division selection with the Cardinals going 17-7 and reaching the North 1, Group 1 quarterfinals and the county semifinals.

“I know we’re a pretty young team this year, and I just want to try to lead by example,” said Beazley, a co-captain along with senior second baseman Kristen Finger. “We had a really pretty hard loss Saturday [13-2 to Wayne Valley in five innings], and we wanted to rebound from that. And we did respond with a much better effort.”

Pompton Lakes (3-3), which defeated Manchester, 21-2, in a five-inning affair Monday, will go for three in a row when it travels to North Haledon on Friday to play Mary Help.
