PARAMUS – John Burger just wants to keep refining and improving his technique. He took another step in that direction Wednesday night.
A junior at New Milford, Burger pinned Michael Dios of Lodi in 2:41 at 126 pounds in the first round of the Region 2 wrestling tournament at Bergen Community College.
The second seed in his weight class, Burger improved his record to 32-5 and now has 96 victories in his career.
“I just wanted to use this as prep work, and I think my concentration, intensity and timing was there for the entire bout,” said Burger, who applied a half-nelson for the fall. “I felt good out there and I just want to advance as far as I can here, and I also want to do well in the state tournament again this season.”
Burger was faced with a major challenge Saturday when he was major decisioned by Bergen Catholic’s three-time unbeaten state champion Nick Suriano, 17-4, in the District 7 final.
