EAST RUTHERFORD – It’s rare when a wrestler can say in season that he’s enjoying the weight where he’s wrestling.
Issues of diet and cutting weight always seem to put a damper on the fun.
Well the fun’s over for Sam Schneider of Emerson/Park Ridge. Now it’s time for him and his teammates to get down to business.
The senior dropped to 132 pounds for the first time this season Friday night and sparkled on the way to a 52-second pin to help power the Cavos to a 48-21 victory over Becton/Wallington and put them in the driver’s seat on the road to the NJIC Division 1 title.
“I was enjoying 138, eating three meals a day and drinking a ton of water,” said Schneider, a returning state place-winner who expects to wrestle 132 for the rest of the season. “I think I’ll be good with [the weight]. It’s all about discipline.”
“I was very happy with Sam’s performance,” Cavos coach Stan Woods said after winning his state-record 692nd career dual match. “I thought he might be a little drained but he went right out there and got the pin.”
